Series: Pillar Four
It is impossible to live the Christian life and God never intended for you to do it in your own strength, goodness and power. He never intended it. Jesus did not go to the cross and bear such a terrible thing for us to then have to live it on our own. He paid the price for all of it. He paid the price for your sins and He paid the price for the life that you live now. Jesus says, “I came that you might have abundant life.” Do you think you are living the abundant life? Are you kind of living a half life? God wants to have you live a truly abundant life in Him. He set up everything you need. There is nothing you have to think of. God has done it all for you. It comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the power of the Holy Spirit, in order to be able to walk daily in the Spirit.
(Look at these two pictures. The first one you are looking at is a traffic jam. Do you feel like that is your life? You are just one car in a line of many. The sun is going down. You are tired and frustrated, worn out and exhausted. Is that your Christian life? Do you feel like that? Look at this second picture. Look at this couple. There they are in the last part of their years. They still like each other. They still love each other. Look at both of them. They both have the joy of the Lord.) God has it for everybody; men and women alike. I had a flight attendant on the way to London telling me that she had never heard of the Holy Spirit. She did not even know anything about anything. She had never been to church. Her parents had never gone to church. I grew up going to church every Sunday and I did not know who the Holy Spirit was. Who is He? Who is the Holy Spirit? I only knew Him as “baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.” Down you went under the water and came back up.
Who is the Holy Spirit? First of all, He is not an it. He is a He. He is third person of the Trinity. Jesus refers to Him as He. “When He comes He will teach you all things.” How do you describe the difference between God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? Here is a good way to think of it. I heard Benny Hinn say this one time. Think about electricity. Who is the source of electricity? God. Who brings it to you? Jesus because it says in the Bible everything was done by Him from the very beginning. Who is the Holy Spirit? He is the power that goes through it. You go over and turn on the light switch in your life. God is the source of it. Jesus is the one who brought it to you and the Holy Spirit is the power that shoots through you. He has been there from the very beginning. He is always a part of the Trinity. There has never been a time that he has not been.
Why is it so hard to describe the Trinity to somebody or the difference between God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit? It is hard, is it not? Play like you are an ant and you are trying to describe a human to another ant. “Do they have all the legs we do? No they do not. Do they crawl on the ground like we do? No they really do not. Are they little like we are? No, they really are not. They are bigger than we are. Do they look like us, kind of red? No, they do not look like us; they come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Do they talk ant talk? No they do not talk ant talk. They talk this other talk. Can you understand it? Sometimes.”
What is the Holy Spirit’s personality like? If you got tickled listening to that story, I can tell you this much, He is a lot of fun. I can tell you He makes me laugh. Jesus laughed a lot. He had that joy of the Lord over every circumstance. The Holy Spirit has emotions. You can grieve Him. You can vex Him, which is really frustrating. He can have great joy. This is what I was talking about. He can be very peaceful. He can be very strong and yet very gentle. He can be as gentle as a breeze. Sometimes I will be talking about the power of the Lord and God trying to get some knowledge to me, and the wind starts blowing almost every time. I really believe that is the Lord saying, “Betty, listen up. I am coming to you.” The Holy Spirit loves people. Do you love people? If you do not love people, get filled with the Holy Spirit. He will pour His love through you for these people. You will be amazed. You will find yourself loving people you never thought you could love. That is that daily walking with the Holy Spirit; loving people, not being exasperated, irritated, gripey, boring, dull and indifferent. The Holy Spirit is definitely not boring. He is like picking up a piece of electric wire that you are just shocked to pieces.
Can you quench the Holy Spirit? Absolutely. Look at I Thessalonians 5:19. You can quench him. In your daily walk you can quench him. How do you do that? How do you quench the Holy Spirit? You do it by what you think and do. Does He get mad at you? I told you that He can really get irritated. Yes, vexed, but really He wants to help you. He understands that you have got to learn how to do it. You are going to fall down. You have to make mistakes. He never gives up on you. God never gives up on you. He will never give up on you.
There is someone watching this show and you are in jail, actually you are in prison. Even the guards do not like you. Nobody likes you. You think that you do not like anybody. I am mean and I am tough and I do not like anybody. God says to you, whoever you are listening, “No, you are like a pussy cat. You are just as sweet on the inside. You have been hurt so much by people in authority, by people who should have taken up for you.” I am giving you a word from the Lord, listen to me. He says, “You are not like that at all. I want to break that off of you. You do not have to be afraid of Me or people. I am going to give you a sign. You are going to see it in the sky and I am going to give you a sign. This is Me, God Almighty, talking to you in that prison cell. I am talking to you. I am going to do a big thing in your life.” People are going to be looking at you and they are going to almost be afraid of you now because you are so kind. They will think, “What is he up to?” You are only going to be up to God. That is what you are going to be up to.
Can the Holy Spirit talk to you? Hebrews 3:7 says that He can. He can talk to you in all kinds of ways. He wants to talk to you. God wants to talk to you. The Holy Spirit loves to praise Jesus. That is probably the thing He loves to do the most is bring people to Jesus and to glorify Jesus and to honor Him. It is all about Jesus folks, it is all about Jesus.
How do you get the Holy Spirit in your life? When you have your day of salvation, He comes and fills you according to Ephesians 1:13. He then has a second experience for you. You can be filled with the Holy Spirit and have a different life. You have to ask daily to be filled with the Holy Spirit because you are a human. You make mistakes. You do things that you should not do. You knew you should not have done it. You do things and you did not mean to do it and you did it. You can ask Him every day, “Holy Spirit, fill me up again. I want to walk with You; and I want You to walk with me.”
The Holy Spirit is the voice of the Lord to the people. Look at this first Scripture in Isaiah 11:20 about Jesus, but it can be talking about you too. “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him. The Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” Are you afraid of the Lord? I am. What do you mean, Betty? We are not supposed to be afraid of the Lord. We are all trying to understand that He loves us. There is a holy, reverential fear in me. I hope in you also that says I am dealing with the God of the universe and I better shape up. I know He loves me. I know He cares about me. I know He is tender toward me. He is tender toward you but you do not mess with God. God is not mom. Do not ever think you are getting away with something because you are not. It will always come out.
Who baptizes you with the Holy Spirit? Jesus. That is what John the Baptist said, “Someone is coming. I am not even worthy to lace His shoes. He is going to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.” When you get baptized in the Holy Spirit, Jesus did it. It is His job to teach you. It is His job. In John 6:45, “He is going to teach you all things.” He is going to lead you. He is going to guide you. “Do not go that way. Do not go that way. Go this way. ‘Okay.’ Do not say that, say this. ‘Okay I will say it.’” His job is to correct you. Do you not want to be corrected? You do not want to keep making mistakes. I do not want to keep making mistakes. “Lord, help me. I am so sorry. I want to change.” He says, “Okay, I will work on it.” His job is to comfort you.
Look at John 14:6. He is a comforter. When you are going through hard times, experienced failure, people have come against you and all manner of things are against you; He comes to you. He says, “I did not say it. I love you, Betty.” God loves you. He loves you just like He loves me. He does not have favorites. He loves you and He wants to comfort you. There is someone right now who is going through a deep mourning period. In fact, your grief is so deep that you think you will never get out of it. It consumes you every single day. You can smell the grief in your nose. You know who I am talking to. You can smell it. It is overwhelming to you. God says, “If you will let Me, I will comfort you and I will take this spirit of grief out of your life.” That is what it is. It is not from God and it is not you, it is a spirit of grief. Right now, in the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of His name, I command you, you spirit of grief, get out of this person. Leave them alone and set them free. God has a big call on your life and this spirit of grief has completely stopped you. God says, “Enough, enough, I am your comforter.”
The Holy Spirit comes to quicken you. If you heard that word right and said, “Uh-oh, that is me.” You felt it in here, did you not? That is what it says. He quickens you. There is a quickening on the inside of you when God is talking to you or dealing with you or wants you to do something. In Isaiah 62:1, it says, “The Lord anoints us to do His work.” When you walk in the Holy Spirit and cooperate with God every single day, He wants to use you in some big way or in some little way. Sometimes He just anoints you to spend time alone with Him, getting to know Him, love Him or fellowship with Him. God loves to spend time with you. You are His favorite person. I am His favorite person. How can that be? It is because He is God Almighty, King above all Kings and He can be that way toward anybody and everybody all at the same time. God wants to do powerful things through you on a daily basis. He will if you will let Him. Just say, “Lord, I really do want to walk in the Holy Spirit right now, today. Fill me up. Tell me what to do. Do something through me.”
Look at this second Scripture in Zechariah 4:6, “Then he said to me, this is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel, it is not by force. It is not by strength, it is by My spirit says the Lord of heaven’s armies.” In the King James translation, it says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” So often, we get in situations that we think I have to be really, really strong. I have to have the power. I have to get this done and nothing happens. We wonder what went wrong. God says, “I said it was by My spirit. I wanted to do things through you but there was no way anybody would think it was you. They would look at it and say that this is God. That is God.” Don’t you want God to speak through you to other people? Sure.
In Matthew 10:20 He says that He will tell you at that moment what to say. Look at Luke 12:12 and John 14:26. He says that I will even remind you. Have you ever been talking to someone and all of a sudden a Bible verse pops into your mind and pops out of your mouth? You think, “I did not know that I knew that verse.” That is the Holy Spirit. He knows all of the verses. He knows just which one to pull out. The more time you spend with God, walking in a daily walk with the Lord, filled with the Holy Spirit, reading the Bible, asking God, “God speak to me today through the Bible, talk to me today.” Let Him come and talk about anything He wants to.
God wants to be your really good friend on a daily basis; He wants to walk with you daily. When you talk to your really good friend, He talks to you about all kinds of things. Sometimes He talks about His relationship with you. Sometimes He talks about something He is interested in. Sometimes He tells you about something He is doing with someone else. It is the same way in this daily walk with God. He reminds you of things. He tells you things to say. One of the greatest struggles that I have gone through in my Christian walk is the passage where Jesus said, “I only do what I see My Father doing and I only say what I hear Him saying.” I can remember thinking what does that mean? How do you do that? Gradually, gradually, God has had to pry my hands loose of being so organized. You would be amazed if you knew how I have these lessons all done and how I start talking to you and the Holy Spirit says, ‘No, tell them about this. Do not say this and now say that.” It is almost like a symphony and there is a great conductor, and I am not it. He just tells me what to say and do. The Holy Spirit told Paul, “I have called you to speak before Kings and do not worry about what you are going to say. I will tell you in that very hour what to say.” He did. Paul constantly seized the opportunity when he was with great people. Why? It is because they have so much influence on so many people. He was not afraid of them.
One thing God has taught me to do in my daily walk with Him, in order to not be a people pleaser or worry about what people think, He has told me, “Betty, it is like you have an audience of one and I am your audience.” You cannot see this studio right now, but there is a chair here. If I could point, it is right there. I always think that is Jesus sitting there listening to me. I want to make Him happy. I want to make Him laugh. I want to say what He wants me to say and so I am listening. As I have moved in a daily walk with Him, listening to what He is saying and saying that. As I am looking in my mind’s eye, what do I see Him doing and going and doing that? It has been amazing the difference in the power that has gone through my life in the way that God has used me. It is significant. I want to encourage you to do it.
What else does the Holy Spirit do? He fills you with that salvation. Then He lifts up Jesus to people around you. What is an example in the Bible of maybe the most powerful thing the Holy Spirit ever did that He has never done ever since? The Holy Spirit is still doing things today. He is doing the same Bible stuff, the same stuff. Do not kid yourself that it all ended years ago. It is going on now. If it is not happening where you are, it is happening somewhere else. I see it and hear about it and talk to people who have done it. What is something the Holy Spirit did in the Bible and it had never been done before and has never been done since? Impregnate Mary. It says, “When the Holy Spirit comes on you, He will overshadow you Mary. You are going to have a baby and you are a virgin.” It has never been done before. Luke 2:35.
What else does the Holy Spirit do that is really important on a daily basis through your life? He tells you how to put on the weapons of warfare and fight the devil. You know that you have an enemy. The Bible says that it is not flesh and blood. It is something behind flesh and blood. He is powerful but we are more powerful. Never forget on your daily walk with the Lord, “Greater is He that is within you than he that is in the world.” Who is that talking about? It is talking about the devil. He is in the world. He is everywhere. We are greater. He is more afraid of the weakest Christian.
There is someone watching right now and you think “I am a weak Christian.” Just start saying the name of Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. I heard about a man that is a mighty pastor. You may have heard of him. His name is Pastor Cho. He is in Korea. He has the largest church in the world. He is a big, important man who has done great things, great miracles. God said, “Go to the Japanese and tell them I love them.” He said, “I do not want to go tell them I love them, they tortured my family.” He said, “Go to the Japanese and tell them I love them.” He went and he was staying in a hotel room the night before he was to preach, lying in bed. The devil himself came into the room, eyes blazing red, full of fire and hate. He said, “I am going to kill you. You are not going to do this.” Pastor Cho said, “For all my great spirituality, I was paralyzed with fear, paralyzed. I could not move I was so scared.” He said, “Finally I said Jesus, and the devil was gone in an instant.” Just remember the name of Jesus. There is great power in the name. I used to could say the Good Lord, Lord, God, but when it came to saying Jesus it was hard for me to say that word. There is power in the name of Jesus.
The Holy Spirit cannot walk through your life on a daily basis unless you allow Him. Recently, a friend of mine, Dave, was with us in Africa and he said, “Run through us God, run through us.” I thought that was the neatest thing. We all say, “Walk through us, move through us, and lead us.” Run through us. I said, “Dave, I love that.” He said, “Yeah, if you are an empty vessel He can run through you and do anything He wants to.” Why don’t you start praying, “Lord, run through me as I walk daily. Run through me.” Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not just a one time thing. You do get filled with the Holy Spirit and there is that experience, but it is a daily, daily infilling.
What are people like who are not walking in the Holy Spirit? Listen to this. I am going to read this to you out of The Message Bible. See if this describes your life. I hope it does not. Galatians 5:16-22 “So I say, live by the Spirit and you will not satisfy the desires of a sinful nature, for the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit desires what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do what you want. If you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law.” What are the acts of a sinful nature? Listen to these in verse 19. “They are obvious: sexual immorality (the world thinks today that everything sexual is okay but it is not), impurity, debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft. Witchcraft is a sin of the flesh. People do not know that. Hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, delusions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” Do not make the mistake of thinking you can live like the devil, die and all of a sudden God is going to say, “That is okay, I will let you in.” No, you have to walk with Him. He is worth it. If He has done this much to save your life for all of eternity,
What is the fruit of the Spirit? How can you tell you are filled with the Holy Spirit? In the third Scripture it says, “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.” An example of what it would be like where your sinful nature wants to control you, and you have to let the Holy Spirit control you. It is not always easy. Sometimes there is a real war that goes on. Let us say that you have a problem with getting irritated with people and you are impatient. You say, “I am not going to do that anymore. Actually every time people act like that it drives me crazy so I have to change, Lord. I know you want me to be patient and kind and that drives me crazy and I get irritated.” Right there, God will put you in situations over and over and over and say “Let the Spirit lead you.” What do you have to do? You have to push that old self down and say, “Get down self. I am walking with the Spirit and I am going to have patience, kindness and gentleness.”
Remember, you are going to have joy if you are filled with the Holy Spirit every day. You are going to have unexplainable peace. You are going to be completely sold out to the Lord. You are going to live by faith. You will discover you are a much more powerful witness than you have ever been when you are filled with the Spirit walking every day. God will set up situations and say, “Tell them. Say that to them.” You will discover that things you used to struggle with in sin. You look around and think, “I have freedom. I have freedom in it.” God does it, but you have to sell out completely to Him. It is worth it.
